about

Recording engineer and producer Prince Fatty (Mike Pelanconi) revisits the vintage Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee Reggae catalogue with new Dub mixes and edits of 10 classic Roots Reggae tracks, originally voiced by Linval Thompson, Horace Andy, Cornel Campbell, Leroy Smart, Don Carlos and other luminaries from the golden era of Reggae. The mixes were made in real-time in the analogue realm and recorded to 15 i.p.s reel-to-reel tape, following the tradition pioneered in the 1970s by King Tubby and Bunny Lee.

Edward O'Sullivan Lee, O.D. (1941-2021), often known as ‘Striker’ or ‘Striker Lee’, was the pre-eminent Jamaican record producer of the 1970s. Lee worked at the cutting edge of a continuum of new genres including Rocksteady, Reggae, and through his close association with Osbourne Ruddock (King Tubby), he was instrumental in the introduction of Dub music to the global marketplace.

Mike Pelanconi, better known as Prince Fatty, has led new generations into the worlds of Reggae, Soul and Latin grooves, while earning a reputation as one of the world’s best modern Dub producers. Pelanconi "virtually reinvented lovers rock" on the first two Hollie Cook albums, beginning with her breakthrough hit "Milk And Honey" in 2011. Credited as Mike Pelanconi, he also mixed Lily Allen’s bestselling Alright Still album. His affinity with music from different cultures has led to running collaborations with musicians from New York to São Paolo to Lagos to Bangkok. He learned his craft with Rebel MC, The Orb, On U Sound and Acid Jazz, before time spent in Los Angeles at hip-hop label Delicious Vinyl. He has had the honour of working with a great range of musical talent, including Horseman, Mungo's Hi-Fi, Winston Francis, Big Youth, Earl 16, Manu Chao, Mad Professor, The Last Poets, Tony Allen and the legendary J Dilla to name a few. An analog specialist and a DJ's favorite, you can find him playing clubs and festivals and guesting on heavyweight soundsystems. You can hear his music in the pantheon of international popular culture, on soundtracks to shows like Breaking Bad and Grey's Anatomy and in games like GTA.

Carter Van Pelt, VP Records' Director Of Catalog Development, selected the multi- track recordings from the Gorgon Music archives, provided creative direction for the project and packaging, sequenced the final selections, and wrote the liner notes for Prince Fatty Meets The Gorgon In Dub. Van Pelt was the curator of VP's 40th anniversary retrospective box set Down In Jamaica - 40 Years Of VP Records.

Artist Herbert Spliffington illustrated the cover, based on the long history of comic book superhero cover art in the dub tradition. The Gorgon character is based loosely on the Gorgon of Greek mythology and the volcano God character from Moana.
